Join us for a film screening.
At MAVtech we don't just preserve old films-we screen them as well! On the last Friday of each month (except December) we open our doors and start our projectors for a night at the movies. The Coronation Hall has been a cinema since 1911 and we have kept the 200 fancy seats in the upstairs 'dress circle'. The film starts at 7pm with doors opening at 6pm so guests can have a look at our exhibits before the screening. At only $10 per person it is a fun filled evening from the golden days of film.
Each movie night begins with a newsreel or a classic cartoon. We screen all sorts of movies from different eras and genres- check out our homepage for our next screening night.
To complete the experience we screen our older films on 1940s Kalee Projectors. These fantastic machines were made long before xenon lighting and still uses high intensity carbon arc lamps. They are among the few carbon arc projectors still in use in Aotearoa and we are very proud of them. These generate a lot of heat which keeps our projectionists warm and cozy in winter and perspiring in summer! We also play digital movies on a modern projector.
MAVtech's cinema can also be booked for private events of twenty or more guests. We can screen a suitable movie from film or file for you as well as offer a tour of the museum. Click here to find out more about visiting us.
